Serena by ShenaniBOOM Serena by ShenaniBOOM
So apparently, this certain lady who's a friend of my mom's suddenly lost her 21-year-old daughter; she died in her sleep. The reason for her death is still not known.

This lady then decides to ask my mom to ask me to draw her a picture; one depicting her daughter as a warrior angel.

Her daughter was big into anime but she was also a fan of 'Star Wars' and cyberpunk movies like 'Blade Runner'. I decided to try and incorporate as much of her as possible. I took inspiration from classic sci-fi movie posters and tried my best to play around with perspective and composition to create something truly dynamic and overall pleasing to look at.

Serena's favorite colors were yellow and orange as is the main color scheme of the piece. Also, her holding a cat at the bottom of the picture recalls the time she used to volunteer at a cat adoption facility and her general love for animals.

The more I heard about what she was like and her interests, that's where it started to get a bit eerie to me; as I said, she liked anime (cool), her favorite saints were Saint Joan of Arc (she's my patron saint) and St. Micheal the archangel (also a favorite of mine), she was rather shy and reserved (check), liked to read (check), was very self taught in various things, she had a nag for drawing and creating characters, she had a rather dark sense of humor.....even my mom said that her mom might as well could have been describing me.

When I went to their house to give her mom the drawing and visit for a bit, her mom let me look through some of Serena's books to see if I wanted to take anything. Her sense of humor certainly showed through some of the titles she owned (one called 'How to Pass as a Human'). Among the books was one of her sketchbooks. I flipped through it and discovered she was quite good. I was genuinely impressed. That's when I also discovered that she also created fictional characters, complete with descriptive character profiles. Something about that hit a certain string in my heart and I broke down. I never even knew her. I'm not even sure if I've ever seen her in person, but I reacted to going through her stuff like I was touching the relics of a close friend. It was odd, to say the least.

Also, as her mother was about to open this present, she said she wasn't even 100% sure if I did commissions and the like at all (or if I still did them), but for whatever reason felt compelled to ask for a drawing. She entertained the idea that it could've been Serena compelling her...You just never know...

Huh. That got more personal that I anticipated ^^'

This drawing was drawn on 11-14in Bristol board with black liner pens and Prismacolor pencils with just a bit of white acrylic paint to add some highlights to the letters.

Completed on 12/27/16.

Brianna, what an incredible drawing.  Your talent never ceases to amaze me!  Although I know Gina, I never had the opportunity to meet Serena, however, she too has been on my thoughts and in my daily prayers.  What a gift you have given to her family. This is really, really amazing!
